What is the Timemore IcyPipe?
The Timemore IcyPipe is a manual ice drip (slow drip) cold brew coffee maker. Ice water in the 450 ml upper chamber drips slowly through the coffee bed and a 350-mesh stainless-steel filter into a 470 ml borosilicate glass server, producing smooth, low-acidity cold coffee without electricity.
What's the difference between ice drip and cold brew?
Both brew coffee cold, but the method differs. Traditional cold brew is immersion: the grounds steep in cold water for 12–24 hours, which gives a smooth, heavy-bodied cup but mutes the brighter, more aromatic notes. Ice drip (also called slow drip, cold drip or Kyoto-style) passes cold water through the coffee bed one drop at a time, so each drop contacts the grounds only once. That single pass produces a cleaner, brighter cup that keeps more of the coffee's aroma and high notes. The IcyPipe is an ice drip brewer, not an immersion one.
How does the IcyPipe keep the drip rate constant?
It uses the constant-pressure principle of the Mariotte bottle. An internal air duct channels outside air to the bottom of the water chamber, so pressure at the outlet stays constant even as the water level falls. This prevents the slowing and stalling common in ice drippers and removes the need to keep re-adjusting the valve during the brew.
How long does a brew take?
You control it. The external needle valve sets the drip rate, so brew time depends on how far you open it — Timemore does not publish a fixed figure. As a rule, a slower drip yields a sweeter, more concentrated cup, and the Mariotte design means the rate you set at the start is the rate you get throughout.
How much coffee does it make, and how much ground coffee do I need?
The water chamber holds 450 ml and the glass server holds 470 ml, so one brew yields up to roughly 450 ml. The brew chamber takes a maximum of 50 g of ground coffee (all figures manufacturer-stated). Use a medium-coarse grind, as you would for other cold brewing methods.
Do I need paper filters?
No. The built-in 350-mesh high-density 304 stainless-steel filter holds back fines on its own and pours a clear, residue-free stream, so there is nothing to buy or replace.
Is it BPA-free, and how do I clean it?
Yes — the frosted upper chamber is Tritan, a BPA-free copolyester, and the server is high-borosilicate glass, with a 304 stainless-steel filter and valve. The whole brewer detaches, so every part can be rinsed individually. Hand washing is recommended, and the parts stack vertically for compact storage.
